Sri Lankan sculptor Wanindu Hasaranga took the lead in the Purple Cap race in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Friday with his two wickets against Punjab Kings for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He is tied with Yuzvendra Chahal on 23 wickets but has a better economic rate so far this season. His compatriot and an IPL veteran, Lasith Malinga, congratulated him on Twitter and further said it was going to be a battle between “the two spinners” for the Purple cap – which is given to the highest wicketkeeper in IPL. – this year.

Chahal, who was picked up by the Royals before this season and was teammates with Hasaranga at RCB for the second half of IPL 2021, responded to the tweet with two heart emojis.

Both Hasaranga and Chahal were in good shape this season, giving their teams important breakthroughs. The duo claimed five wickets each season, with Chahal also getting a hat-trick.

Chahal got his five-wicket count against Kolkata Knight Riders, which included his first IPL hat-trick. Hasaranga took his score of five wickets in RCB’s win over SunRisers Hyderabad.

Chahal was at RCB for a few years before being bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 6.50 crore. Hasaranga meanwhile sparked a major bid war and was eventually bought by RCB for Rs 10.75 crore.
